Back at Mom's, But Wishing I Was Home I miss my husband. And my own bed. And my own computer (my father has the slowest computer known to man). ::sigh::
Don't really want to watch "The Last Mimzy", but that's what the kids are set on. Wah. | | 11:37 am |
We're about to pack up and head back to Mom's house. It's been a really nice visit with the aunt and uncle; last night we stayed up way too late researching family history (we found out the married name of the elusive great-aunt, as well as the cemetery where lots of the family is buried. All hail the mighty internet!) Then we argued about death and marriage dates (and spellings. Wtf? My great-grandfather's family spelled their name two different ways, and one great-grandfather is apparently buried under a misspelling. Oy.) At least I have a starting point for more research. Next step is to contact the Lauderdale County Sherriff's Department to try and get information about some family arrests for Prohibition-related offenses (in the 1920's, natch). Now I'm off to watch the kids play in the enormous backyard while everyone else gets ready. :) Current Mood: cheerful | | Sunday, August 12th, 2007 | | 3:25 pm |
Mom & the older kids are on their way back, having found bupkiss at the diamond fields. Monkeyboy apparently whined until he got into the pool at the hotel.I got the impression that Peri and I had a better time, hanging around and reading. I've gotten through three novels in the last two days, and I'm working on a collection of Peter Whimsey short stories while Peri plays with one of the cousins.
My aunt and I did some family history research online, and I got copies of a few family photos. Let's hear it for technology, baby!
I ate too much homemade chocolate pie. Mmmmm.
For the Surfer's: My internet connection is spotty at best (the laptop has to be at just the right angle to surf from my aunt's neighbor's connection), so I don't know if I'll be able to upload my Salon contribution until I get back. Not to worry, it's only a page or two long.
Gotta go; there's screeching in the back room. | | Saturday, August 11th, 2007 | | 1:26 pm |
I'm posting from my aunt's house, where we arrived yesterday evening after a long car trip. Today, Mom, Monkeyboy, and Little Tree are off for another five hour trip to Arkansas to dig diamonds, while I stay put with Peri. We were originally supposed to go with them, but decided that it was stupid to take her. So she is staying in air-conditioned comfort where there is a swing set, a kiddy pool, and a playroom while the rest of the family goes to make their fortune. The older children were visibly relieved. ::chuckle::
Got to see lots of cousins and their children last night, and a good time was had by all (especially Monkeyboy).
Monkeyboy story of the evening: Cousin's husband goes in the back room and comes out to report that the children are playing doctor. He knows this because as he walked into the room, he heard Monkeyboy shout: "CLEAR!" Hee!
Manly says we got Monkeyboy's yearly school assessment, which proclaimed him one of the most intelligent and most active children she'd ever taught (emphasis mine). She also noted that Monkeyboy needs to work on paying attention to people who are speaking to him, even when he's not interested. ::snickers a bit:: Can't imagine where that came from.
Off to supervise Peri. Later, taters. | | Friday, August 10th, 2007 | | 7:08 am |
Urgh. Need coffee. ::yawn:: Off to Memphis today, for more family gatherings. ::waves at the folks I'll be passing along the way:: Current Mood: sleepy | | Thursday, August 9th, 2007 | | 11:05 am |
Spent yesterday in the car. Drove to Hotlanta to see my brother (and his girlfriend. And his dogs.), then ate supper and drove back to my mother's. Really. ::is exhausted:: Mom has a dvd player in the car, which is a mixed blessing. On the positive side, the kids were kept mostly hyp-mo-tized, but on the negative, all they wanted to watch was Spongebob, and I'm about crazy from it. And I got a 'half-way boredom' toy for the two younger ones - a stretchy Dracula and Bride of Frankenstein, which Monkeyboy adores but which scare Peri to death (to the point that she wouldn't go in a room because the BAM-PIRE was lying on the table. So of course, Monkeyboy has made sure to play with them often. Oy.) B's house is enormous, and yet valued at less than my dinky hovel. Almost enough to make me want to move to GA, I'm telling you. Little Tree got to help train Brother's police dogs (he's a K-9 officer), and the other two kids spent a lot of time in the playroom (the girlfriend has a five year old daughter.) Plus, we went swimming. This morning, Peri requested that we go back to "Uncle B house!" ::laugh:: Uh, no. Tomorrow, we're off to visit an aunt on the way to Arkansas and diamond mining. (Sorry, lawperry, we're firmly committed to family visits. Oy.) Monkeyboy story: Today, we were watching some kid's show that named the planets, and we discussed the de-planetification of Pluto and how small it was. Monkeyboy said, "I wish I could help Pluto get bigger." Awwww. I had weird dreams - one about Fred and George Weasley and a couple of other Hogwarts kids (and yes, I was THE MOM in it, no fun Hogwarts classes for me). The second one was about a child that my grandparents tried to adopt back when my mother was five or so (and yes, the attempted adoption really happened. We think that the girl was fathered by my grandfather, but there's no way to know for sure.) I think I was looking for the orphanage when I woke up, because I woke thinking "How many Catholic orphanages could there be in Memphis?" Still incommunicado, which sucks because there is LJ DRAMA going down and I don't have any way to read it. Also, I've missed a couple of birthdays (like Stoney! Happy Birthday, chica!) ::waves feebly at you all:: Current Mood: tired | | Monday, August 6th, 2007 | | 6:19 pm |
Smellies! Even with having to brave the DMV for a new license, it's been a pretty good day. The mail brought three separate envelopes full of perfume! Two trades, and my first order from Possets (containing "The Girls Love to Go Clubbing" - honey, clove, and other things - and "The Girls Love Pink Pepper" - honey and pink pepper. "The Girls"=Bees, btw.) They arrived in silver gift bags, with four free samples - "Id", "Ego", "Hyde Park", and "Orion". They're a trifle less expensive than BPAL ($10 for a 7 ml bottle, as opposed to $17.50 for 5 ml bottle), but I hadn't tried them because they're also newer, and tend toward fluffier, floral perfumes. But their Midsummer update really sounded good. The Girls Love to Go Clubbing: ( Imagine the thump of Club Bee music, the Girls show up and they are dressed to kill! Those wasp waists and big black eyes! That hair, those black leggings! The haze of clove with honey and other things.): WOW. I was kind of afraid when I first smelled it, because in the bottle it was all woody - a familiar smell, but not one I wanted to wear. Undaunted, I dabbed it on and waited. OMG. Once it warmed to my skin, it bloomed up all spicy-warm cloves, mixed in with other scents that put me to mind of boys with black eyeliner and waking up with pogo neck and sore feet from hours of bouncing on concrete floors. Absolutely gorgeous, and veryvery evocative. Must have a second bottle. Like, nowish. The Girls Love Pink Pepper ( a gorgeous blending of honey and that woody but feminine scent. This is PINK pepper and it dances beautifully with that deep from the comb honey and other secret ingredients within the blend.): Whoa, peppery! I almost didn't try it on, because it was so very peppery. Wet, it was nearly overwhelming - a blast of pepper that stung my nose. And then it dried. :) Dry,the honey has warmed up until it's the pepper's equal - it has mellowed the pepper, made it sweeter, while the pepper keeps the honey from becoming cloying. Highly unique, and very sexy, though I'll probably wind up trading it for one of the other scents, as I can't see myself wearing it often. Hyde Park ( A supremely classic scent yet quintessentially modern. Green tea weaves its way through a blend of traditional essences): This scent makes me happy. In the vial, it smells like fresh rain, all tangy and wet. Wet on my skin, it's like bouquet of flowers fresh from the garden, water still dripping from their petals. Dry,there's something sweet there - peach? Pear? Crisp and wet and...wow.This is the first time an aquatic has worked on my skin, EVER. I could bathe in this. Id ( Id is all fun with drippy gooey chocolate and a heart of vanilla caramel and sweet sugary indulgence.): I smell...milk chocolate. Maybe a tad of caramel. It went on strong, but it's fading as it dries, becoming less foody (unlike the majority of reviewers, apparently) and more savory than sweet. Interesting. Happily, it does not hate my skin the way some other chocolate notes do. I think I'll have to keep this one back and try it a few more times before I decide what I think. | | Sunday, August 5th, 2007 | | 5:15 pm |
::yawn:: Meeting the other alphas for lunch and writing time today. Hel-lo, Limestone. Heading up to visit Mom day after tomorrow, so this morning has to be spent doing laundry and doing some more rearranging in Monkeyboy's room (I started some bookshelf rearranging, and got sidetracked. Whoops.) Complained directly to SixApart's customer service department about Burr86's mockery. Since I was getting a bunch of comments from that comm before I went to bed, but none at all overnight, I have a feeling action might have been taken. Moving from LJ is going to be just as sad and hurtful as when Moms Online died. :( Current Mood: discontent | | 10:58 am |
LJ has gone off the rails, so I'm casting around for a new blogging home. I'm also at Greatestjournal, and I'm closely watching Scribblit. I'll also probably download Semagic, so I can post to many sites simultaneously, while I wait and see. Current Mood: angry |
